Modular technology of adaptation of training-methodological materials in scientific libraries of institutions of higher education

Abstract. The necessity of expanding the functionality of library management system, what based on the requirements of modern higher education to the organization of a virtual academic space is substantiated. Design of the web-terminal of interactive adaptation of training-methodical media content as the main means of communication of recipients with academic library collections are executed.

Модульная технология адаптации учебно-методических материалов в научных библиотеках заведений высшего образования.

 

Аннотация. Обоснована необходимость расширения функционала автоматизированных библиотечных информационных систем с учетом требований современного высшего образования к организации виртуального академического пространства. Выполнено проектирование оконечного web-терминала интерактивной адаптации учебно-методического медиаконтента как основного средства коммуникации реципиентов с академическими библиотечными собраниями.

Ключевые слова: информационная библиотечная система, виртуальное академическое пространство, инклюзивное образование, адаптация медиаконтента.

 Modular technology of adaptation of training-methodological materials in scientific libraries of institutions of higher education

 

The development of information technologies led to the computerization of the basic categories of processes of infrastructure of higher educational establishment, which allowed to raise educational services to a qualitatively new level with wide opportunities in the organization of interactive academic courses, control of knowledge and certain stages of administrative activity.

However, the mechanisms used today to automate processing of meaningful profile content in disparate learning departments are usually uninterconnected and mostly apply to convert it from one bureau to another to provide a unified academic recognition procedure. The analysis of spreaded educational support systems showed a lack of common standards for data flow exchange and formalized nomenclature interaction with modern office document management tools. Meanwhile when access to the information structures of separated departments that are closely associated with educational activities [1], especially access to such an important organizational unit as scientific library of the edu­cation institution, it is advisable to provide through the functional of a unified virtual academic space, in order to prevent the accumulation of bulky software with ineffective duplication of executed services.

Under conditions of modern higher educational establishment, the classic definition of an library management system (LMS) as a complex resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed [2], needs to be fundamentally refined and updated. In the vast majority of widespread LMS, due attention is not given to the development of such an important component as the front-end web terminal (viewer interface), which does not provide possibility from fully implementing the educational, research and cognitive activities for the student as a representative of the modern information society and a key subject of educational process (in particular also inclusive education). Therefore, timely and topical is the need to design computerized educational-oriented environments for interactive access to actuality training- and methodical content that combines these specified factors properly.

In the presented research the concept of an expanded computerized information library system is introduced, which is adapted to the specifics of the virtual academic environment of the higher educational establishment and is flexibly connected with the peculiarities of knowledge, skills, professional qualities and competences of the trained specialist. This skills are necessary for the implementation of socially significant systemic tasks of professional activity in the profile industry branch of the national economy in accordance with the requirements of the job market.

In particular, in the web-terminal of content viewer as the main means of communicating of recipients with library collections (Fig. 1) of the projected computerized information library system aka КІБіС the this problem of the unpublished faculties funds is solved, the intermediate variant of which, however, is used in the training process of an educational institution as an operational and specifieded methodological provision during the semester for the disciplines envisaged by the curriculum for a particular specialty. Access to these electronic resources has limited category of students – only certain direction of education [3]; also these media content can not be stored in computer memory or otherwise reproduced before the event of the official publication of the final version of the publication, however, they are provided with an opportunity for interactive discussion, commenting, marking errors in feedback from the author.

Thus, the interface of the presented viewer has an original feature: the mechanism of displaying the content stored on the server is realized by generating a binary large object. This binary data stored as a single entity and covers a limited range of the pages of the publication, which is loaded in real time. It is displayed as an image on the canvas of the web-terminal screen form of the client part of the КІБіС with the addition of a privacy attribute, where necessary, that ensures data inaccessibility and the security of the electronic edition from copying.

Implementation of the described techniques of distributed access to teaching- and methodical electronic publications as an intermediate array of binary data along with significantly reduced network traffic also fully provides the service of the automated search for the information content of the publication by directing the context query directly to the knowledge base. Thus, an indication of the detected context of the use of the key phrase in the publication text is carried out through interactive regeneration of the viewer canvas, as opposed to the traditional full-text submission of the electronic resource on information system terminal [4].

One more service function is the ability to create work notes while processing of publication in the current end user profile. The note is tied to the location of the context in the body of the mediasource and thus does not depend on the screen page and resolution of the terminal, the specified type size and zoom. The array of notes, as well as the position of the location in the publication during the last session of work, is stored in an electronic reader's ticket in the catalog hierarchy of the publications being processed. They are available to an authenticated user from any network device. Here, in the virtual catalog, student has the opportunity to conclude the personal summaries from the subject area of the disciplines, stipulated in his individual training plan [1].

The convenience of customizing and optimizing the interface provides a number of provided viewer settings, including changing the transparency of the elements, adjusting the color palette of the font and the background. Selection of day / night mode, high contrast and filter mode individual color settings are corrects [5].

This facilitates perception of the image from the web- terminal screen canvas according to the illumination of the room, as well as improves the appearance of the content for recipients with special needs suffering from light forms of color vision deficiency. Expanding the workspace to the full screen allows to increase the useful area of the screenpage by removing viewer controls such as title or status bar, command buttons and progress bar of the audioplayer, switches of the previous and next pages, also switch to go a specific page by its number. The automatic timer setting and the gesture dialog box for those users who can not use the traditional tools for manipulating the web terminal components are provided.

For a comfortable bibliographic processing of provided content and intuitive navigation, the developed viewer provides a dynamically implemented back matter with table of contents (TOC) generating and full support for cross-reference markup, which also allows structuring the textbook for distributing and improving the perception of information in large publications. The navigation components of hyperswitchover in the web-scheme of the portal in particular provide the loading of the environment of the program knowledge control module with a adoption package of formalized tasks to the content of the current section of the processed methodological mediaresource [1, 3]. In case of a problematic passage of a control measure the learning environment КоНаС, which is developed and applied as an analytical apparat in the virtual educational space of Ukrainian Academy of Printing, will provide identifiers of related theoretical information in accordance with the test results [6]. Next, the projected library mediasystem КІБіС, in accordance with these identifiers, automatically modeling an operative summary of the existing indexed content – the main and auxiliary. The contents of this personalized summary will correspond to the scope of the missing competencies and in the GUI of presented web terminal from the window of the previously described virtual student reader's ticket in the directory hierarchy of personal summaries will be available.

In addition to the described technological solutions for recipients with problems of partial color blind and musculoskeletal system the described means of library funds adaptation offers an advanced functional interactive processing of digital resources of training-methodological documentation in order to closer together of virtual academic space and needs of other categories of students with special requirements that differ in their educational capabilities.

Thus, the embedding of personally oriented learning methods [7] is ensured in the project by transforming the plain text array and non-text objects of digitized funds into other forms of content, taking account the individual features of educational and cognitive activity of the end-user [8]. One of these forms is the audiostream which is generated in real time by integrated software shell of speech synthesis using the algorithm of acoustic and linguistic constraints [9] and the application of the word-formation rules of the terminology of the profile industry. Another solution for recipients with limited visual and auditory capabilities is to convert file of academic discipline information provision from universal code space into a binary eight-bit data structure for further presentation in the form of a relief-dot tactile font.

The output of converted form of content in environment of considered web-terminal is through the built-in software interfaces on the corresponding devices, in particular the original portable model of the electromechanical tactile display for the reproduction of the Braille code, which provides convenient work with the text and the full use of the described viewer functionality - search, keeping a personal summaries, commenting and participating in discussions.

Particular attention when designing the modular technology of distributed access to training ma­terials is given to the stratification of end-user profiles [3, 10] in accordance with the authentication of subject of the academic process in the КоНаС learning environment (Fig. 2, a) [1, 6].

Namely it profiling parameters the list of educational services of designed computerized information library system КІБіС determine, which is closely integrated with КоНаС. The methodological working of teacher in the form of an electronic publication an one of the most common formats is located in the faculties funds of educational documentation. The area of responsibility of the hierarchical profile of the author (teacher, head of chair or administrator) grants him the right to attach a link to the publication with adequate attributes in the structure of the curriculum for the relevant disciplines specified in the table academic load from the teacher database, which is localized by his user account. In the case of official registration of an author's work after editing and publishing, printed copies as material objects come to the funds of the scientific library of the institution, and an electronic copy in the form of a mediaresource is located in the knowledge base on the server side of КІБіС (Fig. 2, b); in the future she is suitable for distribution among recipients of academy library collections and also between readers of friendly public establishments [3].

Access to this mediaresource or its confidential predecessor – e-publication – is provided on request of the user identified in the student database through the virtual work cabinet of his reader's ticket. Thus, the content initialized in the knowledge base is fragmentarily transformed into a binary array and displayed on the client side of the КІБіС (Fig. 2, c) in the viewer of the projected library system.

Thus, the developed client-server technology of distributed access to training-methodological materials in higher learning institutions is the main means of recipients communicating with educational media resources in computerized information library system КІБіС, also described crossplatform mobile web-terminal for viewing content is flexible in interaction with the virtual academic environment КоНаС and implements the prompt distribution of author's electronic editions and their convenient processing in the profiled end-user work cabinet. Dynamic adaptation of training content to the needs of students with disabilities provides for their introduction into the general educational society, which helps to overcome potential barriers to learning, improve the educational structure of the institution, expand the range of teachers strategies with inclusive orientation, organize information support and equal access to quality education.
